This cake is a childhood favorite of many, I'm sure. It's a swirl of colours and flavours, a mixture of a moist yellow cake and a chocolate explosion. It only requires a few simple ingredients, you probably have everything already in your kitchen pantry or cupboards and it is very simple to make. It's simplicity makes it a great cake to make with the little ones, they will especially like creating the swirls at the end.
I followed this recipe on the BBC website.
225 gr unsalted softened butter
225 gr caster sugar
225 gr self-raising flour
3 tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp good quality cocoa powder
Heat oven to 170ºc. Prepare your cake pan by greasing it with butter.
if you have a food processor or a stand alone mixer you can just mix all the ingredients together except the cocoa powder.
I use a hand mixer firstly I mixed the butter and sugar together until well creamy. Add the 4 eggs one at a time, mix well between each egg. Add the flour, milk and vanilla extract and mix thoroughly until all is well combined.
Divide the mixture between two bowls. In one of the mixtures add your cocoa and mix well.
Now is where the fun is coming. Take 2 spoons and one at a time dollop the chocolate ad vanilla mixes in the pan. Make sure the whole of your pan is well covered. Keep dolloping (is that even a word?) until both mixtures are finished. Tap the bottom of your pan in your work surface to avoid having air bubbles that will create trouble when baking. Take a skewer and swirl around to have a fun effect when you cut your cake.
Bake for 45-50 minutes.
